BEAR: Do You Believe in Monsters?

Do You Believe in Monsters? - the transmedia project created to explore the way expectations of masculinity are informed by romanticised violence.

When we set out to adapt Marian Engel’s Bear, we knew we wanted our audiences to be part of the exploration. This series of short films is our invitation to you - to think about the nature of fairytale romance, about what makes a monster, and why we want women to change them.

Marian Engel was, herself, inspired by Canadian First Nations' mythology, and we’ve spent a long time thinking about popular fairytales.

The idea of Lou, our protagonist, falling in love with a violent animal seems implausible, farcical even. But we’ve been questioning the sort of risks women do take when engaging with masculinity, and what the stories we hear as children teach us to expect.

Watch the films, see the show, and join the conversation!
